   • "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" is a very unusual film because the filmmakers obviously were not attempting to make yet another Hollywood style blockbuster. Instead, they seemed to be doing the impossible--make a film that tries very hard to replicate what life was like at sea back during the Napoleonic Wars.

   • I can say most assuredly that it has already earned its place among the pantheon of classic war films and indeed the greatest films of all time. There aren't too many films that can combine intelligence and thrills, but Master and Commander succeeds on both counts.

   • And it proved to be a thoroughly bad idea by President Madison. "Master and Commander" gives us heroes we can root for. We see everything from the point of view of the British sailors aboard the Surprise, just as we would in an Errol Flynn movie, although Crowe is a far more complex character.
