He shares his experiences of working on Time Team, his favourite archaeological discoveries, his life lessons and his hobbies in this interview. Field Archaeologist Matt Williams is Time Team’s resident digger, trench supervisor, ever-willing historic re-enactor and all-round good sport. Matt unearthed his ‘find of a lifetime’ – a rare engraving of ancient Ogham script – on Time Team, and we’re delighted that he is returning for our 2021 digs.
A team of archaeologists, usually led by Mick Aston or Francis Pryor (the latter usually heading Bronze Age and Iron Age digs), including field archaeologist Phil Harding, congregate at a site, usually in Britain. The original Time Team line-up from 1994 has changed over the years.

Matt Williams, a former archaeologist and presenter of Time Team, has joined Wessex Archaeology as Business Manager, Wales. He will be involved in various projects in Wales and the Welsh borders, including the Plumbery, a cathedral cafeteria that was excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 2008.
Matt Williams is a PhD student and Research Associate at the University of York Archaeology Department and part of the DISPERSE Project (see link at end of interview), under the leadership of Professor Geoff Bailey. Post Hole Secretary Khadija McBain conducted this fascinating interview with Matt in December 2011.
