Jul 31, 2020 · Meet the Artists – Matthew Cook. There are probably few who have seen the sights that Matthew Cook has seen, even fewer who have documented them through drawing. But there is only one person who has rendered them in exquisite detail, capturing the character, the excitement and the mundanity with perfect draughtsmanship.
British artist. Prints. (b.1964) England. Matthew Cook is one of the greatest reportage artists today. He began his career by studying illustration at St. Martins School of Art and Kingston Polytechnic. After college, he worked as an expedition artist to Operation Raleigh, travelling to New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and the West Indies.

Matthew Cook is one of the greatest reportage artists today. Fairly early in his career, Matthew was commissioned by the Royal Mail to create a set of five commemorative stamps, and a book “The British Season” by Pavilion Books, which rapidly sold out its entire edition. Matthew has now become very well known for his works in coloured inks.
An exhibition of Matthew Cook’s Iraq war art opens at the Coningsby Gallery on October 25. It comprises more than 90 drawings and paintings executed during his two tours as an artist and soldier. It is an outstanding body of work in the great tradition of British war art by illustrators such as Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden.
