Mar 7, 2022 · Located just behind Fisherman’s Bastion is the intricate Matthias Church (Mátyás Church), the oldest and arguably finest, church in Budapest. Built in 1015 in Romanesque style, the church in its current, florid-Gothic style was constructed in the late 1300s, undergoing extensive renovations in the late 19th century.
In 1994, an unidentified terrorist detonated an IED at the gate of the building that opens towards the Fisherman's Bastion, damaging sixteen of the church's windows. [5] In 1999 the church was—for the first time in its history—handed over to the Catholic Church as parish property.
