Maximilien de Robespierre was baptised on 6 May 1758 in Arras, Artois. His father, François Maximilien Barthélémy de Robespierre, a lawyer, married Jacqueline Marguerite Carrault, the daughter of a brewer, in January 1758. Maximilien, the eldest of four children, was born five months later.

According to her sister, Élisabeth, who married Philippe Le Bas of the Committee of General Security, she was "promised" to Maximilien Robespierre, whose political opinions she shared. 1. Deadbeat Dad. Robespierre’s father came from a long line of lawyers, while his mother was from a family of brewers. Even though his oddly-matched parents were happy, tragedy would soon break this loving family apart: Robespierre’s mother died post-childbirth when he was six years old, and his father abandoned his children soon afterward, leaving them in the care of extended family members.
Robespierre was born in Arras, about 115 miles (180 kilometres) north of Paris, in 1758. His mother died when Robespierre was an infant and his father abandoned the family shortly after, leaving Robespierre and his siblings to be raised by their grandparents.
