Harry Truman had integrated the services, but the Navy was slow to change, and blacks were guided toward two job choices: They could become cooks or officers' valets.
Carl Brashear, an enthusiastic dreamer and son of a hard-working and honest Kentucky share-cropper, decides to enlist in the recently desegregated U.S. Navy, in 1948.
