It is part of the Ottawa, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. Mendota is located approximately 85 miles west of Chicago, 70 miles east of Moline and 55 miles south of Rockford.

Mendota Township, LaSalle County, Illinois. Mendota Township is located in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 7,534 and it contained 3,111 housing units. [2] Mendota Township was formed from Meriden Township in February, 1856.
History of Mendota, IL. Mendota is an American Indian word meaning "Crossing of Trails." It came into being because of a meeting of railroads. The year was 1853 and from that date until well into the 20th Century, the iron horse that rode on rails dominated Mendota's development.
In 1935, the facility was renamed Mendota State Hospital, and in 1974 it became Mendota Mental Health Institute. Its highest patient population was 1,300 in 1959. In 1997, there were fewer than 300 patients.
