Mentha pulegium, a mint relative, is commonly known as European pennyroyal, and is labeled the true pennyroyal cultivar. European pennyroyal, unlike its counterpart, is somewhat invasive, and should be relegated to its desired location by growing it in planters or in garden areas with well-established borders.
First published in Sp. Pl.: 577 (1753) The native range of this species is Macaronesia, Europe, Medit. to N. Iran and N. Ethiopia. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the temperate biome. It is used to treat unspecified medicinal disorders, has environmental uses, as a medicine and invertebrate food and for food.
