Origins. The Merovingian dynasty owes its name to Merovech or Merowig (sometimes Latinised as Meroveus or Merovius ), leader of the Salian Franks from c. 447 to 457 C.E., and emerges into wider history with the victories of his son Childeric I (reigned c. 457 – 481) against the Visigoths, Saxons, and Alemanni.

The Merovingian dynasty ( / ˌmɛrəˈvɪndʒiən /) was the ruling family of the Franks from around the middle of the 5th century until 751. They first appear as "Kings of the Franks" in the Roman army of northern Gaul. By 509 they had united all the Franks and northern Gallo-Romans under their rule.
