“These Kids Turned On Me. They Think I’m A Big F*cking Joke”

Much of the terrible teacher's bitterness arose from the fact that while he got older, his students stayed young and lived life the way that they wanted to. He could have been a great educator when he was younger, but Vernon became more and more pedantic as he aged. “Don’t Mess With The Bull, Young Man, You’ll Get The Horns”

Principal Vernon liked to level with his students, even when it didn't make sense to. This The Breakfast Club quote is a memorable one, as Vernon locks horns (pun intended) with the sassy Bender for the first time in the movie, and warns him to not mess with him. Well, Bender did engage with the bull that was Principal Vernon and earned himself another Saturday of detention, but this was the first in a long line to come. His Barry Manilow remark brought out the snark in Vernon.

“I Got You For The Rest Of Your Natural-Born Life If You Don’t Watch Your Step”

Messing students' plans and lives seemed to be a hobby of Principal Vernon, but none of it really mattered when it came to Judd Nelson's Bender. The bad teacher succeeded in his evil endeavors most times, but it never seemed to work on a student who didn't care at all. When Bender didn't give Vernon the reaction he wanted, the Principal threatened to take over his entire life with Saturday morning detentions, which was a pretty harsh threat (although it was mild compared to his other promises.)

“It Is Now 7:06. You Have Exactly 8 Hours And 54 Minutes To Think About Why You Are Here – To Ponder The Error Of Your Ways.”

Detention and other forms of punishments with negative reinforcement generally don't yield positive results, and it made sense that someone as abhorrent as Richard Vernon would be invested in them. Keeping kids around in school for hours did little to make them repent, and a 1000-word essay did even less. “You Ought To Spend A Little More Trying To Do Something With Yourself And A Little Less Trying To Impress People.”

The worst trait that Vernon possessed was the tendency to compartmentalize people and view them as one-dimensioned. In this quote, his judgment of people and his preconceived notions make an appearance. He was convinced that all Bender wanted to do was impress people with his bravado, without trying to delve a bit deeper into the family problems that made him that way. As an educator, it was his job to bring out the best in his students, but he only knew how to taunt them. This quote really b...

    “Haga-Naga!”

So much of Vernon's character was predictable — a desperately lost man trying to stay relevant by bullying kids — but he also did some pretty weird things himself. Nobody quite knows what the point of this short dialogue was, but it has become iconic. RELATED: 10 Best Indie Coming-Of-Age Movies Hilariously, Vernon is seen walking around hallways to get his sugar fix, and yelling "Haga-Naga!" in thin air, to nobody really. “You Just Bought Yourself Another Saturday.”

Bender and Vernon's verbal battle early on in The Breakfast Clubis memorable, and the tyrant's repeated additions of detention weekends was a big highlight of that exchange, if not the whole movie. The Principal could really care less about the well-being of the teens, only that he got the last word. His authority was important to him, and if he felt that being challenged, he would go to any lengths to assert himself over the kids, especially if that kid was Bender.

“What Did You Want To Be When You Were Young?”

The only time Vernon seems to be a bit coherent and empathetic was when he sat down to speak with Carl, the janitor. He had a moment where he tried to figure out what exactly went wrong in the course of his life, when he once understood the younger generation and now couldn't relate to them at all. Carl does try to explain to him that it was Vernon getting older, and not the kids getting arrogant, but it didn't seem like the mean old tutor got it at all. Still, this was a kinder word from his...

“That's The Last Time, Bender. That's The Last Time You Ever Make Me Look Bad In Front Of Those Kids, Do You Hear Me? I Make $31,000 Dollars A Year And I Have A Home And I'm Not About To Throw It A...

There was a reason why Vernon was considered one of the biggest villains of John Hughesmovies — he was not above getting into a fistfight or throwing hands with a kid he was entrusted with the safety and education of. His monologue with Bender was just absurd, considering how little the student cared. To watch an adult man threaten and intimidate a student verbally is one thing, but to try to physically attack him is another. Richard Vernon was a true tyrant who needed to be kept far away fro...

“What If Your Home, Your Family... What If Your Dope Was On Fire?”

In trying to make Bender understand the mistake he made by pulling a false alarm, Richard Vernon showed just how little he understood the teenager. He thought the biggest worry the student could have was his dope getting ruined, without trying to find out why he was so rebellious. Like everyone else in the room, Bender had family issues, but the teachers did little to try to help. Vernon could be really tone-deaf, but fans still loved his terrible character in the movie.
