Mar 19, 2024 · If you have vinyl- or metal-flanged windows, for instance, you can install drip-cap flashing over the window itself or over a trim piece that you install. For a wood window unit, drip-cap flashing can be installed over the trim piece (often called brick molding) that comes with the window or door.
For best protection, add a metal drip cap at the top of the window, caulked directly to sheathing. The key to success with any flashing detail is to follow the shingle principle, with upper layers of waterproofing materials overlapping lower layers, shedding water to the building exterior.
- Window flashing protects the window—and the house—from water damage. While a home’s siding serves as its main source of protection against the elements, windows and other penetrations through the siding require additional waterproofing.
