    • Jonathan Smith (Oregon State HC) The new man in the top spot is Jonathan Smith. The only concern I have had throughout this process is that Smith has only coached out west, and never in the Midwest, but I have gotten over that, obviously.
    • Mike Elko (Duke HC) Mike Elko has been a top candidate for this job from the minute it opened up, and he would be a home run hire for the program. Duke has taken a small dip this season, but that team has been riddled with injuries.
    • Dave Doeren (NC State HC) Dave Doeren is a Midwest guy who is 103-61 in his coaching career, along with going 80-57 in 11 seasons at NC State. Doeren knows how to build a program and sustain success.
    • Jason Candle (Toledo HC) Is it crazy to have Jason Candle over Jedd Fisch? Some would say so, but I am a huge fan of Candle and would support the decision to hire him to lead the MSU program.
    • Harlon Barnett. If Michigan State decides to hire a candidate from the current coaching staff, the active head coach would be atop the list. Barnett, 56, stepped up to take over interim head coach after Tucker’s suspension and is the most senior member of the staff.
    • Matt Campbell. Campbell, 43, is the head coach of Iowa State. Campbell is a frequent member of coaching rumor mills when jobs open because he has won Big 12 coach of the year three times since taking over Iowa State in 2016.
    • Chris Creighton. One of the bigger swings MSU could take would be on this in-state candidate who coaches Eastern Michigan. Creighton, 54, is responsible for turning around the football program at EMU in the past decade, and has reached a bowl game in five of the past seven years.
    • Pat Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was the last Big Ten coach fired before Tucker’s exit. Northwestern fired Fitzgerald, 48, amid hazing and harassment allegations from former players that became public this past summer.
    • Mike Elko (Duke HC) Mike Elko was No. 1 on the first iteration of this list, and he stays there in version 2.0. Elko is currently leading an injury riddled Duke team, and has them 6-3, despite being without several starters.
    • Lance Leipold (Kansas HC) Lance Leipold has skyrocketed up the rankings for what he is doing at Kansas. He has the Jayhawks at 7-2 this season and looking very strong.
    • Jedd Fisch (Arizona HC) Jedd Fisch is getting very close to Leipold/Elko territory. Fisch has outstanding experience at the NFL and high major level, not to mention what he has done at Arizona.
    • Dave Doeren (NC State HC) I mentioned Dave Doeren as a sneaky candidate for this job, and I am maintaining that sentiment once again. Doeren is a Midwest guy who has built a consistent winner at NC State and has been rumored to have been looking at a potential move.
