Nov 20, 2010 · Root diseases and cankers are the most common fungal pathogens that attack the Eastern white pine. Root disease symptoms are characterized by overall poor growth, the tree becomes off-color, wilts and dies.
Eastern white pine - Pinus strobus. Identification: White pines can be identified by their clusters of long, soft, blue-green needles that grow in bundles of five. This differentiates them from red and jack pines, whose needles grow in bundles of two.

Look-alikes: 1) Off-color needles can be the result of high soil pH. 2) Pines with pine wilt disease (pinewood nematodes) show similar symptoms but white pines are NOT susceptible to pine wilt. Ozone damage. Ozone is the most damaging air pollutant to plants.
Jun 30, 2020 · Expert Response. Your trees have white pine blister rust ( https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/white-pine-blister-rust) . There is no fungicide treatment for this disease. Currants or gooseberries are alternate hosts for this rust, and if either plant is nearby, the rust will continue to be an issue.
