Mid-South Wrestling Association was one of the hottest wrestling promotions of the 1980s, where many diamonds of the professional wrestling business began their careers or passed through its doors. In time, Mid-South became the Universal Wrestling Federation.
The Mid-South North American Heavyweight Championship was the major singles title in the Mid-South Wrestling Association from 1979 until the promotion became the Universal Wrestling Federation in 1986. The title was retired then in favor of the UWF Heavyweight Championship.

Mid-South Wrestling was a small promotion started by Julius Sigel in Louisiana around 1929. Run by "Cowboy" Bill Watts from 1979 until its demise, Mid-South blossomed for a short time under the glare of sudden national television exposure in 1986 to become the upstart Universal Wrestling Federation.

In 1979, Watts finally managed to get control of the territory from McGuirk when Leroy sold out to him. It was at this point that Mid-South Wrestling was born, and boy did Watts hit the ground running. One of the first things Mid-South did was pull out of membership in the NWA.
