The military history of the United Arab Emirates describes the military history of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. Prior to the union of the emirates, different tribal confederations formed the de facto military force which was dominant in the area now known as the United Arab Emirates .
The Union Defence Force was established officially as the military of the United Arab Emirates on 27 December 1971 from a directive issued by Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. [6] As the Union Defence Force, every emirate was responsible for the equipment and training of its own defence forces.

In the turbulent climate that followed the popular uprisings of 2011, the United Arab Emirates began to take a more active role in regional affairs, including military intervention. In 2014 it joined the U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and also conducted limited air strikes in Libya .
The Trucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states - Abu Dhabi, 'Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah, Dubayy, and Umm al Qaywayn - merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah.
