Borge got married to Elsie Chilton in 1933 and adopted two children: Ronald and Janet with her but the marriage did not last very long and he again got married to Sarabel Scraper in 1953 and had two children with her: Victor and Frederikke. Borge died in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 91 in 2000, in his sleep.

Born Borg Rosenbaum in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1909, Victor Borge was the youngest son of Bernard Rosenbaum, a viola player in the Royal Danish Philharmonic Orchestra, and the former Frederikke Lichtinger, a gifted pianist. As might be expected for a family of musicians, Borge was immersed in music almost from birth.
Borge publicly derided Adolf Hitler in his native Denmark just before World War II. When the Germans invaded that country, he managed to escape to America because, since he was married to an American women, he got an American visa.
