Code and Hoagland now argued that Mina and her husband were perpetrating fraud, but that they were doing so unconsciously – a compromise they believed would spare the couple embarrassment. Mina, they decided, was impersonating her dead brother in a state of hypnosis brought on by Crandon’s zeal and the rituals of the séance.
Houdini also learned that her other ardent supporter, Hereward Carrington, not only slept with her, but borrowed money from her husband. Dr. Crandon died in 1939, and Mina fell into a deep depression. She began to age quickly, put on weight, drank heavily and lost her looks. She died Nov. 1, 1941 — the day after Halloween.
She claimed that she could channel her dead brother, Walter Stinson, and gave seances for friends and associates of her husband, sometimes allowing herself to be stripped nude and examined. Mina became well-known as her alleged skills were touted by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and others.
