Eugene Gauss was the eldest son of Carl Friedrich Gauss, the German mathematician and his second wife, Minna Waldeck. He emigrated to the United States in 1832, served as a clerk, then joined the Army, serving in S. Dakota. He settled in St. Charles where he variously farmed, ran a lumber yard and was president of a local bank.
On 4 August 1810, the widower married Wilhelmine (Minna) Waldeck (1788–1831), a friend of his first wife, with whom he had three more children: Eugen (later: Eugene) (1811–1896), Wilhelm (later: William) (1813–1879), and Therese (1816–1864). Minna Gauss died on 12 September 1831 after being seriously ill for more than a decade.
