Miss HIV is a feature-length documentary by Ethnographic Media, released to DVD on August 26, 2008. Written and directed by Jim Hanon (Beyond the Gates of Splendor, End of the Spear), and produced by Mart Green, the film explores the international collision of HIV/AIDS policies while following the journey of two HIV-positive women who enter a pageant in Botswana.

To change her home country of Bostwana’s regional misconceptions about HIV, Mrs. Kesego Basha-Muebli, founded the Miss HIV Sigma Free pageant. A pageant designed for women who are currently receiving health and wellness counseling and HIV antiretroviral treatment to come out to their friends and family as being HIV positive.
Miss HIV is a useful starting point for further exploration of the impact of the AIDS epidemic in Africa and the competing strategies. The documentary gives voice to women in Botswana participating in the Miss HIV Stigma-Free pageant, and college students in Uganda fighting the stigma associated with their choice to remain abstinent.
Nyanzi and Gloria (21) from Uganda were crowned Mr and Mrs Y+ during a beauty contest for young people living with HIV in 2017. The contest doesn’t focus on looks, but on being a role model for other young people with HIV, on being able to advocate for the needs of young people, and to increase acceptance and understanding of young people living with HIV in society.
