  5. Beginnings of the Mission. Mission Santa Cruz was founded on August 28, 1791 by Father Lasuen. Several members of the local Ohlone tribe attended the ceremony. Another date, September 25, 1791 is also found in historical references, but Father Lasuen wasn’t able to attend the September dedication.
