Mitchell Ryan (born January 11, 1934-died March 04, 2022) played Burke Devlin in the original Dark Shadows. Ryan was fired from the show in 1967 because of his alcoholism and was replaced by Anthony George. In a 1976 interview, he admitted "I was so drunk that year, I barely remember what it was about," and that he sometimes turned up to filming drunk. He later conquered the disease and remained an active performer, especially on television. He was sometimes credited as Mitch Ryan.

Ryan was also known for playing the father of Commander Will Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1989 (and was reportedly under consideration to play Captain Picard), Edward Montgomery in the TV series Dharma & Greg between 1997-2002, and drug kingpin General McAllister in the film Lethal Weapon (1987). He was also a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Foundation President.
