The language of Moldova was officially known as Moldovan (лимба молдовеняскэ), and was written with the Cyrillic alphabet. Since 1989 the Moldovan (Romanian) language in Moldova has been written with the same Latin alphabet as Romanian, although some orthographic changes adopted in Romanian are not generally used in Moldova.
Its resolution declared Moldavian a distinct Romance language from Romanian. While a majority of Moldovans with higher education, as well as a majority of inhabitants of the capital city of Chișinău, call their language Romanian, most rural residents indicated Moldovan as their native language in the 2004 census.
