Jul 23, 2022 · Monroe is named after a paddle wheeler, the James Monroe, that made a trailblazing voyage up the Ouachita River from the Mississippi, landing here in 1819. The city is a cultural mecca for this corner of the state, with excellent museums, a symphony orchestra and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Nov 12, 2023 · Nestled in the state of Louisiana (or Pelican State), Monroe is an awesome city to be in, with many significant old mansions now converted into museums. There is the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, owned by Mr. Biedenharn, who was the first person to bottle Coca-Cola, and the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, which has close to 500 wild animals.

It was founded in 1785, when a group of French pioneers from southern Louisiana under Don Juan (later John) Filhiol, a Frenchman in the Spanish service, established Fort Miro.
Monroe is the third-largest city in Northern Louisiana, largest city in Northeast Louisiana, and the parish seat of Ouachita Parish. It is also home to the University of Louisiana at Monroe and their sports team, the ULM Warhawks.

Two giant names of American business are deeply ingrained in the history of Monroe, and its neighbor across the Ouachita River, West Monroe: Delta Air Lines got its start here in 1926 as a crop dusting service, and Coca-Cola opened its first bottling plant here.
