Mortal Engines is a young-adult science fantasy novel by Philip Reeve, published by Scholastic UK in 2001. The book focuses on a futuristic, steampunk version of London, now a giant machine striving to survive on a world running out of resources. Mortal Engines is the first book of a series, Mortal Engines Quartet, published from 2001 to 2006.
I bought Mortal Engines purely on spec, based on the blurb, and before the film appeared in cinemas. It is the first of a series of books, variously called The Mortal Engines or Predatory Cities Quartet, but it is self-contained. I gather the film has not been a commercial success, but I haven't seen it and am not reviewing it.
