Mt. Roosevelt, a mere 2.5 miles from downtown Deadwood, is home to the “Friendship Tower“ monument created by Seth Bullock, in memory of the friendship he had with President Theodore Roosevelt. After a short hike up to the tower, visitors are able to take in the sights of the beautiful Black Hills.

Just outside of Deadwood, you can see the physical monument to that friendship at the Mt. Roosevelt Memorial (also known as “The Friendship Tower”). When Roosevelt died in 1919, Bullock arranged for the erection of the “Friendship Tower” as a memorial to his friend.

Mar 24, 2015 · Shortly after Roosevelt's death in 1919, Bullock and the Society of the Black Hills Pioneers built Friendship Tower on what's now known as Mount Roosevelt as a memorial to his friend. You can find the trailhead leading to the 31-foot tower on the north edge of Deadwood.
