Mount Shasta erupts episodically with ten or more eruptions occurring in short (500-2,000 year) time periods separated by long intervals (3,000-5,000 years) with few or no eruptions. Evidence suggests that magma most recently erupted at the surface about 3,200 years ago.
Mount Shasta is the second highest peak in the Cascade Range, surpassed only by Mount Rainier which is just 249 feet taller. Nonetheless, with a base diameter of more than 17 miles, Mount Shasta has the greater volume. The mountain is one of the southernmost volcanoes in the Cascades, with only Lassen Peak further south.
Whether you feel like a swim at a lake or hike to the top of Mt. Eddy, this is a very spectacular hike! 10 miles roundtrip. Easy to moderately steep. Hiking time 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. 45 minute drive from Mt. Shasta. This hike will be offered 3 Saturdays in July and the first Sunday in August. Happy Customer Feedback.

Geology and History of Mount Shasta. Mount Shasta is located in the Cascade Range in northern California about 65 km (40 mi) south of the Oregon-California border. One of the largest and highest (14,162 ft) of the Cascade volcanoes, the compound stratovolcano is located near the southern end of the range that terminates near Lassen Peak.
