  1. Nov 11, 2021 · Rebecca Hall’s Passing ends on a devastating yet ambiguous note — here is what the ending means, particularly the impact of Clare's death. Based on the 1929 Nella Larsen novel of the same name, Passing is the black-and-white feature directorial debut of Rebecca Hall ( The Prestige ). Just like the novel, the film centers on the practice of racial passing, where lighter-skinned African-Americans pose as white to gain acceptance and avoid segregation.

    • 2001: A Space Odyssey. The surreal last sequence of Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic has puzzled even the director's most passionate fans for decades. Astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) transports across the vast distances of space before ending up in a bedroom and speedily grows in age to become an old man.
    • No Country for Old Men. Instead of seeing an old fashioned Western shootout, the Coen brothers' Best Picture winner was criticized by some for ending rather anticlimactically, as villain Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) kills Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) off-screen and escapes from the authorities.

    • Unbreakable (2000) Most people would point to The Sixth Sense as M. Night Shyamalan's cleverest plot twist, but for my money that prize goes to the man's masterpiece, Unbreakable, and a wildly inventive finale that I simply didn't see coming.
    • The Usual Suspects (1995) Another one of those "iconic" twist endings, not unlike The Sixth Sense, that quickly became a piece of popular culture. It pretty much defines the "unreliable narrator" trope, and it does so in such a deviously clever fashion.
