To his credit, Brooks has stopped killing for two whole years, but his homicidal self / alter ego, Marshall (William Hurt) just won't leave him alone.

Yet the mutual admiration club formed by Costner and Hurt offers some smart, taut comedy in the midst of grim commentary on the impulse to consume violence.
