One of the most faithful film adaptations of one of the greatest Broadway musicals, with Robert Preston recreating his dynamic Tony Award winning performance. Directed by Morton DeCosta and choreographed by Onna White, both of whom staged the original Broadway production.

Rosalind Russell tackles one of the most challenging roles in theater history, “Mama Rose,” a fascinating and complex character that the audience adores and is horrified by in equal measure. GYPSY is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the Golden-Age-of-Broadway style “musical play.”

This adaptation incorporates nearly the entire original book and score from the Broadway original, and recreates Jerome Robbins’ thrilling original choreography. It features a brilliant leading performance by Israeli actor Topol, who played the role of Tevye in the original London production.

Filmed during the show’s national tour, the film features much of the original Broadway cast, including Angela Lansbury. Most significantly it replicates Harold Prince’s brilliant and sensational direction and staging. This is as close to seeing the original production as you can get, and much preferable to the Johnny Depp film version.

This blockbuster screen adaptation is in most ways wonderfully faithful to the original Broadway book and score, and demonstrates how even a delightful and wildly entertaining musical comedy, can tackle big themes and important, serious subject matter.
