    The Mystery Castle was made with an assortment of building materials like recycled car parts and plow discs. It was also constructed with traditional building supplies like stone and cement. Gulley made sure to follow the contour of the mountain to create the structure's unique shape and to save money by not having to dig into the ground.

The castle’s website notes that Gulley recalled memories of him and his daughter building sand castles on the beach together in Seattle.     Mary Lou and her mother moved in shortly after Gulley died in 1945. Mary Lou called the 8,000-square-foot Mystery Castle home until she passed away in 2010.

    No need to search the open desert or any backcountry roads to find this castle. The Mystery Castle is 9 miles south of downtown Phoenix at 800 E. Mineral Road.

    Tours are offered 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays from October through May. Admission is $10, $5 for ages 5-12. Payment is by cash or check only.
