The Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge (formerly the Mystic River Bridge) is a cantilever truss bridge that spans more than two miles (3.2 km) from Boston to Chelsea over the Mystic River in Massachusetts. The bridge is the largest in New England. It is operated by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and carries U.S. Route 1.

Mystic River Bascule Bridge. Connecting the Groton side of Mystic with the Stonington side of Mystic is the famous drawbridge, built in 1922. It is raised to allow boat traffic on a regular schedule from May 1st – October 31st at 40 min. past the hour from 7:40am – 6:40pm, otherwise on demand.

DESIGN AND CONSTURCTION: To accommodate navigable vessels on the Mystic River, engineers designed a cantilever bridge with a main span of 800 feet. The bridge has a minimum clearance of 135 feet above the Mystic River. Concrete piers support from below the steel superstructure of the cantilever bridge.
