Jul 20, 2005 · 1. Introduction. Nakhlites are achondrite meteorites rich in clinopyroxene; extra-terrestrial basaltic rocks composed primarily of augite. The nakhlite lavas erupted and cooled on Mars, and so they are important sources of data about Mars, including: mantle composition, surface materials, atmosphere composition, liquid water, and potential environments for life.
