National Historic Landmarks Program. National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) are historic properties that illustrate the heritage of the United States. The over 2,600 NHLs found in the U.S. today come in many forms: historic buildings, sites, structures, objects, and districts.
The United States National Historic Landmark Program is designed to recognize and honor the nation's cultural and historical heritage. The program was formally inaugurated with a series of listings on October 9, 1960; as of August 21, 2020, there are 2,597 designated landmarks.
Included are lists of National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) and of National Park Service administered areas in U.S. Commonwealths and territories, U.S.-associated states, and in the foreign state of Morocco. There are 23 NHLs in these areas. Map all coordinates using OpenStreetMap.

National Historic Landmarks Listed by State or Territory. The twenty-five hundred properties designated as National Historic Landmarks tell stories that are of importance to the history of the entire nation, not just local communities or states.
Since 1960, thirty-five capitol buildings in the United States have been designated as National Historic Landmarks. This figure includes twenty current state capitols and fifteen “former” capitols—a descriptor that takes in older state capitols as well as colonial, tribal, and territorial capitols.
