Throughout the eighteenth century, the dockyard grew in importance, as it was the only harbour in the Eastern Caribbean large enough for safe naval ship repairs. From 1784 through 1787, the British Hero of Trafalgar, Horatio Nelson, served as the captain of the H.M.S Boreas, sent to Antigua to enforce British laws in the colonies.

Then and Now. On the 14th November 1961, Nelson’s Dockyard was opened as a heritage site by The Friends of English Harbour. Using photographs in the Dockyard Museum Collection from the 1940s and 1950s, we show how the Dockyard has changed over time, transforming it from a historic ruin to an internationally recognized heritage site.
On the plus side, the tour did include a drink of rum punch. Nelson's Dockyard, built in 1725, served as the base for the English naval squadron patrolling the West Indies. This is only working Georgian dockyard in the world. Despite the issues with the included tour, we really did find this place quite interesting.
