In August 2021 following leaked casting reports, Netflix revealed the show's cast for the main four characters: Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley and Dallas Liu as Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko respectively.

- Aang. Gordon Cormier (“Lost in Space”) stars as Aang, the titular 12-year-old Avatar and last airbender. Aang is destined to master all four elements and save the world, but he was frozen in an iceberg for the last century.
- Katara. Kiawentiio (“Anne With an E”) plays Katara, the last waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe. She’s very compassionate and stands up to violence and injustice.
- Sokka. Ian Ousley (“13 Reasons Why”) is Sokka, the overconfident and brash warrior from the Southern Water Tribe. A non-bender, Sokka is a master at the boomerang and often a source of comic relief.
- Zuko. Dallas Liu (“PEN15,” “Shang-Chi”) plays Prince Zuko, who is the son of Fire Lord Ozai, brother of Princess Azula and nephew of General Iroh. A talented firebender, Zuko has been banished from the Fire Nation and ordered to track down the Avatar by any means necessary.
- Aang (Gordon Cormier) Long ago, Aang found out that he was the airbender destined to become the Avatar and master all four elements — water, earth, fire and air — to maintain the peace of the world, but that was before he inadvertently froze himself and his Sky Bison Appa into an iceberg beneath the sea.
- Katara (Kiawentiio) Katara is the last remaining water bender in her Southern tribe village of Wolf Cove. When she was younger, the Fire Nation invaded their camp to get rid of all water benders, but Katara’s mother sacrificed herself to ensure her daughter’s survival.
- Sokka (Ian Ousley) Katara’s protective older brother Sokka became the leader of Wolf Cove when their father Hakoda put him in charge, so Hakoda could attempt a mission that required travel.
- Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) Prince Zuko’s purpose in life revolves around capturing Aang, the Avatar, to bring back to his tyrant father Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim).
