I arrived at Neureut Kaserne March 1965 and was assigned to Co C, 17th Signal Battalion. Five days later I was assigned to Headquarters, Personnel. Later in 1965 the 17th became the 72 Sig Bln in the 516th Sig Group.

Neureut is the northernmost borough of Karlsruhe. It was the most populous rural community of Baden-Württemberg before being incorporated into Karlsruhe on 14 February 1975. Its population is about 18,900 people as of December 2020.
The Neureut Cantonment has the unique distinction in Karlsruhe of being the only barracks built after the war by the Americans. The Cantonment is now the primary site of Karlsruhe signal units as well as three Civilian Labor Service Groups.
Reorganized and redesignated 9 December 1957 as Headquarters Detachment, 72nd Signal Battalion, the unit went through a series of activations and inactivations. The unit's last activation was on 1 January 1972 at Neureut Kaserne, Karlsruhe, Germany.

We were stationed at Neureut Kaserne. We were under the 39th Gp. I think that the 406th arrived at Neureut in 1952 as all colored unit at which time it was slowly integrated.
