In the 14th century this city was aligned along a coastal street, like many settlements of fishers and traders in the Netherlands at that time. Part of this elongated settlement was included in the new city that was designed and built from 1392-196 by rentmeester (local governor) Arent Thoe Boecop.

It must have been a year or two ago that I went cycling with my friends, when we accidentally bumped into this little town called "Buren". I didn't have my camera with me then, and little could I have guessed that I would return there this weekend, for it wasn't planned until the very last moment ... Needless to say (or so I hope based on this photo), it is a rediculously beautiful little town ...

162 votes, 273 comments. true. It's a pretty sad story. It was built as a cheap holiday village in the 1930s, made of small timber-built cottages which, when the tourist industry died, gradually became permanent residences because they were going dirt cheap.
