Kai is the current Elemental Master and Ninja of Fire, Nya's older brother, Skylor’s boyfriend, Ray and Maya's son, and mentor of Wyldfyre. He and his younger sister worked as blacksmiths in their father's blacksmith shop all their life until they met Master Wu.

Kai has been the mascot of most Ninjago waves, as he was the mascot of the sets from the pilot, Season 4, Season 7, Legacy, and Season 11 . However, Kai's eyebrow notch is absent in his pilot and Legacy mascots. Kai is the only character to appear in all Ninjago: Legacy Wave 3 and 5 sets.
