Nov 3, 2022 · Encircled by medieval walls and defended by a Moorish castle, Óbidos is a village that immediately takes you back in time. To many it’s known as the ‘finest walled village in Portugal’ and for anyone looking to get more out of a trip to Lisbon its one of the top day trips available.
- Porta da Vila. Porta da Vila is the main entrance gate into Óbidos. Whether you arrived by car, by public transportation, or on a tour, this will be your introduction to the village.
- Walk the Fortified Walls. One of our favorite experiences in Óbidos was walking the fortified walls that encircle the town. These walls form a 1.5 km loop around Óbidos.
- See the Castle of Óbidos. The Castle of Óbidos dates back to Roman times, was later fortified under Arab rule, and then taken over during Christian rule in 1148.
- Stroll along Rua Direita. Rua Direita is the main street that runs through the heart of Óbidos. It connects Porta da Vila to the castle. This street is lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

- Explore the medieval village. Oozing charm and personality, I’ve loved every visit to Óbidos (and I’ve been about four times already!). The town itself is a pure delight to explore and is in a way an attraction all by itself.
- Visit the churches of Óbidos. Óbidos is home to numerous churches and chapels, both big and small. Each unique different with beautiful interiors and traditional tile works decorating the walls.
- Try out the Ginjinha de Óbidos. If I can recommend one traditional Portuguese drink you should try out when visiting Portugal, the Ginjinha de Óbidos would be it.
- Explore the Streets of Obidos. The number one thing to do in Obidos is to get lost in the labyrinth of narrow white-painted cobbled streets. The city is stunning, with each street filled with small white houses, traditionally painted with blue and yellow edges.
- Shop on Rua Direita. The main street of Rua Direita is home to many shops selling handicrafts, art, and souvenirs, as well as plenty of great restaurants & bars.
