- THE FIRST OFFICIAL CONAN STORY WAS A KULL REWRITE. Conan wasn’t the only barbarian on Robert E. Howard’s resume. In 1929, the writer created Kull the Conqueror, a more “introspective” brand of savage that gained enough interest to eventually find his way onto the big screen in 1997.
