EXHIBITS & HISTORY. Historic DeKalb Courthouse. DeKalb County Georgia’s first courthouse was located in Decatur, as the seat of government; built in 1823 it was described as a “crude wooden structure.” The next courthouse was built in 1829, and was located in the center of the square.
Jun 6, 2022 · DeKalb began work in 1898 on a new granite courthouse, equipped with a special room for women, complete with toilets. Walls were constructed of two layers of bricks made in Decatur and covered with granite from Lithonia. The cost was $60,000.

DeKalb County's fourth courthouse, built in 1916 and known today as the Old Courthouse, sits on the historic square in Decatur. A small park and bandstand surround the building, which today houses the DeKalb History Center.
