Old Main is the oldest building on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of the University (especially to alumni and residents of the state of Arkansas), and of higher education in general in Arkansas.

Old Main. Old Main was the first permanent building to be erected on the Arkansas Industrial University campus. Its exterior was finished in 1875, just three years after the university opened for classes. It is the oldest building still standing on the campus and the only one built in the 19th century still standing.

May 4, 2023 · It is well known that Old Main was built using plans originally designed by John M. Van Osdel of Chicago for a building on the University of Illinois campus. While the building in Illinois is long gone, we know that the towers in Illinois were opposite to those in Arkansas.
