Built in approximately 1270, the Old-New Synagogue was the oldest building in the Jewish Town within Prague, and as such became the heart of the community’s district. The Bohemian king, Premsyl Otakar II had given the Jews the right to built and protect their synagogues.

    • Its Age. From its gothic architecture, one may assume that the building was erected in the 13th century, making it more than 750 years old.

    • Its Hallowed Walls. Although the interior walls today are simply painted, they weren’t always. For many years no one dared to touch the walls with any tools.

It stands in the Josefov district, the former Jewish quarter in Prague, in the immediate vicinity of the center on Old Town Square. It was built around 1270 and is the oldest preserved synagogue in Europe.
