Old Spanish, also known as Old Castilian ( Spanish: castellano antiguo; Old Spanish: roman [3] [roˈman], romançe, [3] romaz [3] ), or Medieval Spanish ( Spanish: español medieval ), was originally a dialect of Vulgar Latin spoken in the former provinces of the Roman Empire.
The language known today as Spanish is derived from spoken Latin, which was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans after their occupation of the peninsula that started in the late 3rd century BC.
