Melanne Verveer Opal Tometi was born in Phoenix, Arizona and grew up in a tight-knit Nigerian immigrant community. She grew up to become a community organizer, and an advocate for just immigration. In 2013, she co-founded Black Lives Matter, alongside activists Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors.
