The oldest known harvestman, from the 410-million-year-old Devonian Rhynie chert, displayed almost all the characteristics of modern species, placing the origin of harvestmen in the Silurian, or even earlier. A recent molecular study of Opiliones, however, dated the origin of the order at about 473 million years ago (Mya), during the Ordovician.

Opiliones (‘harvestmen’ or ‘daddy longlegs’) are a remarkable group of arachnids (electronic supplementary material, figure S1), with a fossil record dating to the Early Devonian, having diversified in its main lineages by the Carboniferous [1–3], and showing ancient vicariant patterns that accord with their modern distribution [4–8].
