In the Original Clue there are 6 characters, this continues to be the case in 1949, Discover the Secrets, 2012, 2016, and 2023. However other editions have been released where there are up to 10 playable characters, for example, Clue Master Detective. The below table shows how characters appeared in various versions of the game.
There were several differences between the original game concept and the one initially published in 1949. In particular, Pratt's original design calls for 10 characters, one of whom was to be designated the victim by random drawing prior to the start of the game. These 10 included the eliminated Mr. Brown, Mr. Gold, Miss Grey, and Mrs. Silver.
