Kruger died at the Motion Picture and Television Country House in Woodland Hills, California, on his 89th birthday. Kruger was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame ; one for TV and one for film.
She died of pancreatic cancer on May 12, 2005, at age 78. His family had educated him as a musician, but he entered acting with a bit part in "Quo Vadis?" for a local stock company, eventually becoming its leading juvenile.

While appearing in the pre-Broadway tryouts for Advise and Consent in 1960, Kruger suffered the first of several strokes that would eventually render him inactive. Otto Kruger made his last film, Sex and the Single Girl, in 1964; he died 10 years later, on his 89th birthday.
