A young woman visits her grandmother, who appears as if she is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. As soon as the young woman leaves, the caretakers put the grandmother back into a container in a very large storage facility.
Hank decides that his father, a famous blues musician named Joe "Madman" Dell, needs to move to a retirement home. Shortly after joining the home Joe begins to suffer memory problems and complains about bad dreams. His grandson, Ronnie, notices the change and becomes worried. He meets a young woman, Tara, whose grandmother has been in the facility for some time and has deteriorated to the point of catatonia. She tells him she also has misgivings about the treatment of the residents at the facility. Hank begins to exhibit renewed ambition and quickly learns new business and computer skills, seemingly with no training at all. He attempts to reconnect with Ronnie, who has was closer to Joe than he is to Hank, but Ronnie dismisses his overtures at being a better father. It is revealed that the retirement home is also an enterprise that removes the memories of their elderly residents, which are then sold to people who use the memories to learn new skills. Hank made a deal with the facility to allow his father's memories to be removed in exchange for all the new skills he has acquired.
When Ronnie tries to rescue his grandfather from the home, his father appears, seemingly to thwart the rescue. However, Hank tells his son to leave with Joe and go home. Hank then uses the machinery to perform the same type of memory lobotomy on the director of the retirement facility, ensuring their work cannot continue. Later, Hank and his family gather around to hear Joe and Ronnie play the guitar together, now realizing that his father's presence should be cherished while they have the time to be together.
