The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity inPacific Rim Uprising. John Boyega stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous "Kaiju." Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori — who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara,...

Ten years ago, Marshall Stacker Pentecost of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps gave his life in a mission to seal the interdimensional portal allowing Kaiju to invade Earth. Since then, the PPDC has amassed influence and much of the world has recovered from the war. One notable exception is Santa Monica, California, where Stacker’s son Jake makes a living as a thief. A washout from the Jaeger program, he now uses his insider knowledge of the giant mechs to liberate valuable parts from the local scrapyard. One such operation falls apart when a mysterious figure snatches a Jaeger power core just before he can reach it. After evading the hostile gang who accompanied him to the scrapyard, he tracks the thief to an abandoned warehouse. She is Amara Namani, a teenager building her own miniature, single-pilot Jaeger for when the Kaiju return. When the PPDC arrives on the scene, Jake and Amara escape in her Jaeger, Scrapper, only to be confronted by November Ajax. They manage to outmaneuver it...

In July 2012, director Guillermo del Toro discussed the possibility of making a Pacific Rim sequel. "We always leave ideas that were in the first draft as you go along. You know, either a set piece that was great but too expensive, an idea that was really bright, but it couldn't quite fit the structure... so we have a little stash of stuff we wanted to do that we didn't get to do. So if that's a possibility, A) I would be very happy to do a sequel, but B) a lot of these ideas, set pieces and all that, actually have in them a really good seed for a sequel." On December 4, Legendary Pictures announced that it had selected Pacific Rim co-writer Travis Beacham to write the sequel, along with del Toro, though there was no comment as to whether del Toro would return to direct the second film. At WonderCon 2013, del Toro expressed enthusiasm for a potential crossover between Pacific Rim and Godzilla—another Legendary Pictures kaiju film—but stressed that no such plans were in place. In Jul...

The fandom appears to have begun at least in part because the film is a summer blockbuster featuring a Woman of Color in a leading role, where she is not sexualised and has a strong character of her own, and there were calls to ensure its success to show Hollywood that this kind of film can have commercial success. Shortly after the first screenings, word passed that in addition to having a strong female character, it was a story with a lot of heart and was not just an America-centric story but an international one. The concept of neural bridges and drift-compatibility added to the appeal as it made for excellent shipping opportunities and became a common fusion AU. Additional appeal comes from the two scientists, who are portrayed as geeky nerds with socialization issues. Most of the fannish interaction occurs on Tumblr, with some interaction on Facebook, Twitter, and to a lesser extent, Dreamwidth and LiveJournal. As with any female character, there has been some dispute as to whether Mako Mori should be considered a strong female character. Proponents say that she is not sexualised or judged based on her appearance or gender. She is able to physically defend herself, and has a character arc independent of male characters. Further, detailed observation shows that in many ways she is doing most of the fighting through both the Hong Kong fight sequence, and the fight sequence at the Breach. Opponents point to several moments of weakness, including when she bows to Stacker Pentecost's pressure that she not be a pilot, and when Raleigh evacuates her from the jaeger before he evacuates himself. On the whole, however, she is generally regarded as a strong character. Some point out that given how the film manages to include a female character of such authenticity, it ought to be able to pass the Bechdel Test, as that is a much lower standard for good treatment of women. However, Mako Mori is the onl...

The world of drift-compatibility makes for excellent shipping fodder and, as a result and in addition to canon-based works, Pacific Rim AUs, fusions, and crossoversare very popular. Other trends include sentient jaegers.

Yonggary's name comes from the Korean word for "dragon" (yong) and a monster from Korean legend, Pulgasari. The English spelling of Yonggary's name is inconsistent: materials for his debut film spell his name as "Yongary" with one "g," while materials for Reptilianspell it as "Yonggary" with two "g"s. Yonggary's English name has also been spelled as "Yongkari."

In Yongary, Monster from the Deep, Yonggary is a bipedal reptile with a long horn on his snout, tusks on the sides of his mouth, and a single row of dorsal plates, similar to Godzilla's but shorter. He has red, glowing eyes and spikes in his tail, similar to Stegosaurus. In Reptilian, Yongarry's head is more feline and retains his basic shape, but with a smaller nasal horn, three larger horns on the back of his head, and spiked shoulder pads.

Yonggary was an ancient reptile who was awoken by a bomb going off in the Middle East, and a resultant earthquake which traveled through the Earth to his underground home. He rampaged across South Korea in search of gasoline and oil, his favorite foods. After an attack on a refinery in which Yonggary displays a weakness to ammonia, the South Korean government lure him to a river by covering it in oil, and then covers Yonggary in the ammonia when he arrives. Yonggary dies an excruciating death...

In this incarnation, Yonggary is a 200-million-year-old giant dinosaur, approximately fifty times the size of a tyrannosaurus rex, that is reanimated by Galaxion alien set upon taking over the Earth. Upon reanimation, the aliens use Yonggary to attack several cities and cause destruction. When the military find a way to break Yonggary from the aliens' control over him, the aliens send their personal monster, Cykor, to battle Yonggary. Yonggary eventually defeats Cykor and the aliens retreat....

    Durability

In the film Reptilian, Yonggary was immensely durable, able to shrug off attacks from jet fighters and airborne soldiers. His durability also granted him great strength, enough to even keep a building from collapsing onto the ground below.

    Fire Breath

In Yongary, Monster from the Deep, Yonggary can breathe a concentrated stream of flame from his mouth, sufficient to set tanks on fire and destroy fighter jets. Its range is limited, as he was unable to shoot down a helicopter hovering overhead.

    Fireball Generation

Yonggary also displayed the ability to produce fireballs from his mouth. It is unknown how many he can fire at any one time, but they possessed enough force to destroy jets and kill Cykor.

    Japanese: ヤンガリー
    Serbian: Jонгери

In Reptilian, Yonggary sometimes emits an edited stock roar which dates back to the 1957 Universal Pictures films The Land Unknown and The Deadly Mantis. It was also used for King Kong in the 1976 film and Toto in Gamera the Brave.

Screenwriter Yun-sung Seo envisioned the original Yonggary as a single-celled organism from outer space mutated by radiation.
The original Yonggary suit was constructed for $5,000 by Equis Productions co-founder Masao Yagi, who was heavily involved with the Showa Gamera films. Like many of Daiei's kaiju, the original Yong...
